Geographic Border Locations:

Lebanon

In the Bible, Lebanon is not the name of a country, but the name of a mountainous region.  It borders and runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast for about 100 miles beginning  at the mouth of the Litany River, north of the city of Tyre.  The area is actually two mountain ranges, approximately parallel to each other.  Today the western range is called the Lebanon Mountains or Mount Lebanon, and the eastern range is called the Anti-Lebanon Mountains.  The southern part of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains is the location of Mount Hermon, which in the Bible is also called Sirion and Senir (Dt. 3:9).  The two ranges are separated by the Beka'a Valley, a flat plain which is the northernmost part of the Great Rift Valley running down to Mozambique in east Africa.  The Biblical name for this Great Rift Valley is the Arabah.  The name Lebanon comes from the word for "white" because the tops of the mountains in this range are covered with snow for half the year, and perhaps also because of the white limestone in it's upper ridge.
