The Chosen People:
The Throne of David
The Throne of David is relevant to the study of the Chosen People because of the frequent references in the Bible to the Throne of David existing forever. Ultimately, there will be a Jewish descendant of King David ruling over the Jewish nation eternally. Also called the Throne of Israel and the Throne of Yahweh.
1Kg 1:13,37,47
13 Go in to king David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord, king,
swear to your handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me,
and he shall sit on my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign?’
37 As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and
make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.”
47 Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David,
saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make
his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the
bed.
1Kg 2:12,24,33,45
12 Solomon sat on the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was
firmly established.
24 Now therefore as Yahweh lives, who has established me, and set me on the
throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised,
surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day.”
33 So shall their blood return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his seed
forever. But to David, and to his seed, and to his house, and to his
throne, there shall be peace forever from Yahweh.”
45 But king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be
established before Yahweh forever.”
1Kg 3:6
Solomon said, “You have shown to your servant David my father great
loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in
righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this
great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne,
as it is this day.
1Kg 5:5
Behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Yahweh my God, as Yahweh
spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your
throne in your room, he shall build the house for my name.’
1Kg 8:20,25
20 Yahweh has established his word that he spoke; for I have risen up in the
place of David my father, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as
Yahweh promised, and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of
Israel.
25 Now therefore, may Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David
my father that which you have promised him, saying, ‘There shall not fail you
a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children
take heed to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’
1Kg 9:5
then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever,
according as I promised to David your father, saying, ‘There shall not fail
you a man on the throne of Israel.’
1Ch 29:23
Then Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king instead of David his
father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
2Ch 6:10,16
10 “Yahweh has performed his word that he spoke; for I have risen up in the
place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as Yahweh promised,
and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
16 “Now therefore, Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David
my father that which you have promised him, saying, ‘There shall not fail
you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children
take heed to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.’
2Ch 7:18
then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, according as I
covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘There shall not fail you a man to
be ruler in Israel.’
Ps 122:5
For there are set thrones for judgment,
the thrones of David’s house.
Ps 132:11
Yahweh has sworn to David in truth.
He will not turn from it:
“I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.
Is 9:7
Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on the
throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with
justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal
of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.
Is 16:5
A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in
truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do
righteousness.
Jr 13:13
Then you shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will fill all the
inhabitants of this land, even the kings who sit on David’s throne, and
the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with
drunkenness.
Jr 17:25
then shall there enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on
the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their
princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall
remain forever.
Jr 22:2,4,30
2 Say, Hear the word of Yahweh, king of Judah, who sits on the throne of
David, you, and your servants, and your people who enter in by these gates.
4 For if you do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of
this house kings sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and
on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.
30 Thus says Yahweh, Write you this man childless, a man who shall not prosper
in his days; for no more shall a man of his seed prosper, sitting on the
throne of David, and ruling in Judah.
Jr 29:16
thus says Yahweh concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and
concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven’t
gone forth with you into captivity;
Jr 33:17,20,21
17 For thus says Yahweh: David shall never want a man to sit on the throne of
the house of Israel;
20 Thus says Yahweh: If you can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of
the night, so that there shall not be day and night in their season;
21 then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he
shall not have a son to reign on his throne; and with the Levites the
priests, my ministers.
Jr 36:30
Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have
none to sit on the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out
in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
Lk 1:32,33
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord
God will give him the throne of his father, David,
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to
his Kingdom.”
