The Promised Land:
2 1/2 Tribes settled East of the Jordan
Nm 21:24,25,31-35
24 Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from
the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of
the children of Ammon was strong.
25 Israel took all these cities: and Israel lived in all the cities of the
Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns.
31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
32 Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its towns, and drove out the
Amorites who were there.
33 They turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan
went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, “Don’t fear him: for I have delivered him into
your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you
did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
35 So they struck him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none
left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
Nm 32:1-42
1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude
of livestock: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead,
that behold, the place was a place for livestock;
2 the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to
Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
3 “Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and
Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4 the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for
livestock; and your servants have livestock.”
5 They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given
to your servants for a possession; don’t bring us over the Jordan.”
6 Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, “Shall
your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here?
7 Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into
the land which Yahweh has given them?
8 Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
9 For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they
discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into
the land which Yahweh had given them.
10 Yahweh’s anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying,
11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and
upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob;
because they have not wholly followed me:
12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun;
because they have followed Yahweh completely.’
13 Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and
forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil
in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.
14 “Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful
men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.
15 For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the
wilderness; and you will destroy all this people.”
16 They came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our
livestock, and cities for our little ones:
17 but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel,
until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in
the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18 We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited
every man his inheritance.
19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and
forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan
eastward.”
20 Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves
to go before Yahweh to the war,
21 and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he
has driven out his enemies from before him,
22 and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you shall return, and
be guiltless towards Yahweh, and towards Israel; and this land shall be to
you for a possession before Yahweh.
23 “But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be
sure your sin will find you out.
24 Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that
which has proceeded out of your mouth.”
25 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying,
“Your servants will do as my lord commands.
26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock, shall be there
in the cities of Gilead;
27 but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before
Yahweh to battle, as my lord says.”
28 So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the
son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of
the children of Israel.
29 Moses said to them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will
pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle, before Yahweh,
and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land
of Gilead for a possession:
30 but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions
among you in the land of Canaan.”
31 The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As Yahweh
has said to your servants, so will we do.
32 We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the
possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33 Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of
Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land,
according to the cities of it with their borders, even the cities of the
surrounding land.
34 The children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,
36 and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
37 The children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
38 and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they
gave other names to the cities which they built.
39 The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it,
and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
41 Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth
Jair.
42 Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his
own name.
Nm
34:14,15
14 for the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers’ houses,
and the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers’ houses, have
received, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received, their inheritance:
15 the two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond
the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”
Dt 2:24,31
24 “Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold,
I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land;
begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
31 Yahweh said to me, “Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his
land before you: begin to possess, that you may inherit his land.”
Dt 3:1-4,8,12-20
1 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came
out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
2 Yahweh said to me, “Don’t fear him; for I have delivered him, and all
his people, and his land, into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did
to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
3 So Yahweh our God delivered into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all
his people: and we struck him until none was left to him remaining.
4 We took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we didn’t
take from them; sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in
Bashan.
8 We took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the
Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount
Hermon;
12 This land we took in possession at that time: from Aroer, which is by the
valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead, and its cities, gave I
to the Reubenites and to the Gadites:
13 and the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I to the
half-tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, even all Bashan. (The same is
called the land of Rephaim.
14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the
Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own
name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.)
15 I gave Gilead to Machir.
16 To the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead even to the valley
of the Arnon, the middle of the valley, and the border of it, even to the
river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;
17 the Arabah also, and the Jordan and the border of it, from
Chinnereth even to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of
Pisgah eastward.
18 I commanded you at that time, saying, “Yahweh your God has given you
this land to possess it: you shall pass over armed before your brothers the
children of Israel, all the men of valor.
19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your livestock, (I know that you
have much livestock), shall abide in your cities which I have given you,
20 until Yahweh gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also possess
the land which Yahweh your God gives them beyond the Jordan: then you shall
return every man to his possession, which I have given you.”
Dt 29:7,8
7 When you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of
Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we struck them:
8 and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites,
and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.
Jsh 1:14
Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock, shall live in the land
which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but you shall pass over before your
brothers armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them
Jsh 12:1-6
1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel struck,
and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the valley
of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:
2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which
is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the middle of the valley, and
half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;
3 and the Arabah to the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and to the sea of the
Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth Jeshimoth; and on the
south, under the slopes of Pisgah:
4 and the border of Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, who lived
at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
5 and ruled in Mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and in all Bashan, to the border of
the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of
Heshbon.
6 Moses the servant of Yahweh and the children of Israel struck them. Moses
the servant of Yahweh gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the
Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Jsh 13:8-13,15-32
8 With him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which
Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of Yahweh
gave them:
9 from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that
is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon;
10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to
the border of the children of Ammon;
11 and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount
Hermon, and all Bashan to Salecah;
12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the
same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for Moses attacked these, and
drove them out.
13 Nevertheless the children of Israel didn’t drive out the Geshurites, nor
the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this
day.
15 Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their
families.
16 Their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon,
and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba;
17 Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth
Baal Meon,
18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar in the mount of the valley,
20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth Jeshimoth,
21 all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian,
Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.
22 The children of Israel alse killed Balaam also the son of Beor, the
soothsayer, with the sword, among the rest of their slain.
23 The border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was
the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the
cities and its villages.
24 Moses gave to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad, according to
their families.
25 Their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of
the children of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah;
26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the
border of Debir;
27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of
the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan’s bank, to the uttermost part
of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.
28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their
families, the cities and its villages.
29 Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was for
the half-tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families.
30 Their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of
Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities.
31 Half Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan,
were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the
children of Machir according to their families.
32 These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab,
beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.
Jsh 14:3
For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe
beyond the Jordan; but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.
Jsh 18:7
For the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of Yahweh is their
inheritance. Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their
inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave
them.”
Jsh 22:4,7,9
4 Now Yahweh your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore
now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the
servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan.
7 Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan;
but to the other half gave Joshua among their brothers beyond the Jordan
westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,
9 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which
is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their
possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.
1Ch 5:26
The God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit
of Tilgath Pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the
Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought
them to Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river of Gozan, to this day.
1Ch 26:32
His brothers, men of valor, were two thousand seven hundred, heads of fathers’
houses, whom king David made overseers over the Reubenites, and the
Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites, for every matter pertaining
to God, and for the affairs of the king.
1Ch 27:20,21
20 of the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half-tribe of
Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah:
21 of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of
Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner:
Neh 9:22
Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted after their
portions: so they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of
Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
Ps 135:10-12
10 who struck many nations,
and killed mighty kings,
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms of Canaan,
12 and gave their land for a heritage,
a heritage to Israel, his people.
