The Dispossessed People:
The Amorites
The Amorites were descendants of Canaan, son of Ham, son of Noah. The name means "highlander" or "hill men". They were called Amurra or Amuuri in old Assyrian and Egyptian inscriptions. The Amorites lived on both sides of the Jordan River. The area where they lived on the west side of the Jordan River was the mountainous area west of the Dead Sea. East of the Jordan River they occupied Gilead and Bashan. The Amorite king, Og of Bashan, was the last of the remnant of the giants (Dt 3:11).
Gn 10:15,16
15 Canaan became the father of Sidon (his firstborn), Heth,
16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite,
Gn 14:7,13
7 They returned, and came to En Mishpat (the same is Kadesh), and struck all the
country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that lived in Hazazon Tamar.
13 One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. Now he lived by the oaks
of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were
allies of Abram.
Gn 15:16,18-21
16 In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the
Amorite is not yet full.
18 In that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your seed I have
given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river
Euphrates:
19 the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
Gn 48:22
Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out
of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.”
Ex 3:8,17
8 I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to
bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with
milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the
Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
17 and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the
land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and
the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”’
Ex 13:5
It shall be, when Yahweh shall bring you into the land of the Canaanite, and the
Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to
your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall
keep this service in this month.
Ex 23:23
For my angel shall go before you, and bring you in to the Amorite, the Hittite,
the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them
off.
Ex 33:2
I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the
Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
Ex 34:11
Observe that which I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the
Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
Nm 13:29
Amalek dwells in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and
the Amorite, dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and
along by the side of the Jordan.”
Nm
21:13,21,25,26,29,31,32,34
13 From there they traveled, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which
is in the wilderness, that comes out of the border of the Amorites: for the
Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
21 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
25 Israel took all these cities: and Israel lived in all the cities of the
Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns.
26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought
against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to
the Arnon.
29 Woe to you, Moab!
You are undone, people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
and his daughters into captivity,
to Sihon king of the Amorites.
31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
32 Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its towns, and drove out the
Amorites who were there.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, “Don’t fear him: for I have delivered him into your
hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to
Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
Nm 22:2
Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
Nm 32:33,39
33 Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of
Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land,
according to the cities of it with their borders, even the cities of the
surrounding land.
39 The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and
dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
Dt 1:4,7,19,20,27,44
4 after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and
Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.
7 turn, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and
to all the places near there, in the Arabah, in the hill country, and in
the lowland, and in the South, and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanites,
and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
19 We traveled from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible
wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as
Yahweh our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.
20 I said to you, “You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which
Yahweh our God gives to us.
27 and you murmured in your tents, and said, “Because Yahweh hated us, he has
brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the
Amorites, to destroy us.
44 The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and
chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.
Dt 2:24
“Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I
have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land;
begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
Dt 3:2,8,9
2 Yahweh said to me, “Don’t fear him; for I have delivered him, and all his
people, and his land, into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to
Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
8 We took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites
who were beyond the Jordan, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon;
9 (which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir;)
Dt 4:46,47
46 beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon
king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of
Israel struck, when they came forth out of Egypt.
47 They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two
kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise;
Dt 7:1
When Yahweh your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it,
and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and
the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the
Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you;
Dt 20:17
but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite,
and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has
commanded you;
Dt 31:4
Yahweh will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites,
and to their land; whom he destroyed.
Jsh 2:10
For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red
Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two
kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you
utterly destroyed.
Jsh 3:10
Joshua said, “Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that
he will without fail drive the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and
the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from
before you.
Jsh 5:1
It happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan
westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how
that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of
Israel, until we had passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there
spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Jsh 7:7
Joshua said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh, why have you brought this people over the
Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to
perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan!
Jsh 9:1,10
1 It happened, when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill
country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of
Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and
the Jebusite, heard of it
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the
Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
Jsh 10:5,6,12
5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered
themselves together, and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped
against Gibeon, and made war against it.
6 The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, “Don’t
abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all
the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together
against us.”
12 Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites
before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand
still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon!”
Jsh 11:3
to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite,
and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite under
Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
Jsh 12:2,8
2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which
is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the middle of the valley, and
half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;
8 in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the Arabah, and in the slopes,
and in the wilderness, and in the South; the Hittite, the Amorite, and the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
Jsh 13:4,10,21
4 on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the
Sidonians, to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;
10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, to
the border of the children of Ammon;
21 all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian,
Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.
Jsh 24:8,11,12,15,18
8 “‘I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the
Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand. You possessed
their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
11 “‘You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho
fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the
Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.
12 I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the
two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow.
15 If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose this day whom you
will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the
River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you
dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”
18 Yahweh drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived
in the land. Therefore we also will serve Yahweh; for he is our God.”
Jdg 1:34-36
34 The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country;
for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;
35 but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in
Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became
subject to forced labor.
36 The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock,
and upward.
Jdg 3:5
The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the
Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
Jdg 6:10
and I said to you, “I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my
voice.’”
Jdg 10:8,11
8 They troubled and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen
years oppressed they all the children of Israel that were beyond the
Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.
11 Yahweh said to the children of Israel, “Didn’t I save you from the
Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from
the Philistines?
Jdg 11:19,21-23
19 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of
Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Let us pass, please, through your land to my
place.’
21 Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand
of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the
Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the
Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.
23 So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from
before his people Israel, and should you possess them?
1Sm 7:14
The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel,
from Ekron even to Gath; and its border did Israel deliver out of the hand of
the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
2Sm 21:2
The king called the Gibeonites, and said to them (now the Gibeonites were not
of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the
children of Israel had sworn to them: and Saul sought to kill them in his zeal
for the children of Israel and Judah);
1Kg 4:19
Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the
Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer who
was in the land.
1Kg 9:20
As for all the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the children of
Israel;
1Kg 21:26
He did very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites
did, whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel.)
2Kg 21:11
Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations, and has done
wickedly above all that the Amorites did, who were before him, and has
made Judah also to sin with his idols;
1Ch 1:13-16
13 Canaan became the father of Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,
14 and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,
15 and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,
16 and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.
2Ch 8:7
As for all the people who were left of the Hittites, and the Amorites,
and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of Israel;
Ezr 9:1
Now when these things were done, the princes drew near to me, saying, The people
of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from
the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of
the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the
Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
Neh 9:8
and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give
the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite,
and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed, and have performed
your words; for you are righteous.
Ps 135:11
Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms of Canaan,
Ps 136:19
Sihon king of the Amorites;
for his loving kindness endures forever;
Ezk 16:3,45
3 and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem: Your birth and your birth
is of the land of the Canaanite; the Amorite was your father, and your
mother was a Hittite.
45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her
children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and
their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
Am 2:9,10
9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
whose height was like the height of the cedars,
and he was strong as the oaks;
yet I destroyed his fruit from above,
and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt,
and led you forty years in the wilderness,
to possess the land of the Amorite.
